    Sedile Dominova Sorrento

Several centuries before Sedile Dominova became a tourist attraction in Sorrento, it was once the seat of political activities. It is where noblemen convened to discuss administrative affairs, and other matters involving politics. Considering the building’s original purpose, it is not surprising why its architectural design is grandiose. The walls, ceilings, and hallways are furnished with some of the finest pieces of artworks in Italy. Tourists who have visited the town often recommend this building to first time visitors.

This historic building is located at Via P. R. Giuliani, 58 , which is quite close to the coast of Sorrento. The site of the gate alone is enough to pique your interest because it is decorated ornately. As you walk into this 14th century building, you will immediately notice the town as it is painted elaborately. If walk further into the building, you will reach the atrium. This part of the building was added sometime in the 16th century. Large pillars and arches support the structure of the atrium. All of them are massive with grandiose and impressive design.

Majolica tiles were used to decor the dome of Sedile Dominova Sorrento, which are quite refreshing to the eyes with their yellow and green coloring. The interior side of the doom shows the house symbols of the nobilities that once used the building for political activities. These days however, you will only find an influx of tourists instead of men from noble families. Many of the original decorations were severely damaged through time, and most the ones you see are loyal recreations. However, the 18th century frescos are original as they are preserved well.

Because of Sedile Dominova Sorrento popularity, the building is often filled with many tourists. Consider eating a sumptuous meal in one of the nearby restaurants while waiting for the crowd to thin off. There are many to choose from, but the nearest options include La Pizza del Poeta, Le Colline di Sorrento, and Pub America. The whole area around the building is also buzzing with tourists activities. With that in mind, consider booking a room in Astoria Hotel, Palazzo Montefusco Sorrento, Magi House Relais, or in any hotel near the building.

The beauty and history of Sedile Dominova never fail to fascinate people. If somebody recommends this building to you, then best believe all the impressive things they say about it. The town’s main square, Piazza Tasso Sorrento, is also located nearby. This means you can do a lot of fun and exciting before or after you visit the building. If you love art, architecture, and history; then the Sedile is the perfect tourist spot for you. Be sure to tell your tour guide to include it in your itinerary.[/tab]

    Corso Italia Sorrento

Corso Italia Sorrento is the main street that will get you to anywhere you want visit in Sorrento. In the evening they close the street to car traffic, so you can enjoy a very pleasant walk. However, at other times you have to be on your guard as cars, buses and scooters go whizzing by. There are many historical beautiful buildings, including the stunning Sorrento Cathedral.

Both locals and tourists take advantage of strolling along all the shops. It gets very crowded so just be careful, particularly with little children. It’s a wonderful place to shop or just people watch. You can enjoy an ice cream or eating at one of the fine restaurants/cafes. There is plenty of street entertainment as well on the weekends.

Shops on Corso Italia Sorrento seemed to be cheaper than those in the pedestrian streets running parallel. You can find a wide variety of local products here. Fine leather belts, hand-stitched tablecloths, olive oil, wine, food, and souvenirs. Where ever you go, you are bound to find shops selling lemon products (candy, soap, limoncello, etc.) Limoncello is the local liquor. The locals make it from (you guessed it) lemons (also sugar, alcohol and water.) It’s sold everywhere, and you can buy it for relatively cheap. It’s delicious, and makes for a terrific souvenir to take home from Sorrento.

This area is also famous for it’s wood carvers and inlaid wooded products. You can find many shops that sell just about anything that you can imagine done in inlaid wood (small music boxes, jewelry boxes, etc).

Primavera Gelateria Sorrento is super famous in Sorrento, and for good reason. There is always a line out the door. It has a very fun atmosphere, and they have so many flavors to choose from. Prices are great too. Make sure to check out all the photos of celebrities hanging on the wall. The best photo in my opinion is the one of the Pope!

From Corso Italia Sorrento, there is a path to view Marina Grande Sorrento (fishing village). You have an excellent view from here. You can see the fishermen boats and their colorful houses overlooking on the beach.

At the far southern end (follow the flag poles) there are some spectacular views, that should not be missed. Look over the wall, and check out the deep gorge running through the center of Sorrento, it’s simply breathtaking.

If you have a car, be sure to park in the outskirts as there is no parking available in the area.[/tab]

    Piazza Tasso Sorrento

Piazza Tasso Sorrento is the main piazza of Sorrento. If you plan on visiting Sorrento, you will definitely come across this central spot. It is thought as the entry point for the historic part of town and just a terrific place to relax with a glass of wine and people watch.

Piazza Tasso Sorrento is named after the native poet Torquato Tasso. He was born 1544 and died in 1595, just before he was to be crowned Poet Laureate. A beautiful marble image of him stands in the center of the square. The other large statue is of Sant Antonio Abate, the patron saint of Sorrento. At the north eastern side of the square is Church of Santa Maria del Carmine, with its gorgeous Rococo facade of gleaming white-and-yellow stucco.

There some fabulous shops, restaurants and bars all around. Make sure to visit the Fauno Bar. It is located on the edge of the square. It’s a wonderful spot to sit and enjoy a cappuccino and their famous dessert lemon cake. It is absolutely scrumptious.

The main shopping street (Corso Italia) of Sorrento, and lots of small streets that have more shops, etc. also runs off of Piazza Tasso Sorrento. It also provides easy access to Marina Grande Sorrento, where you can catch the boat to Capri island. You can reach the marina by taking a public bus, private shuttle or the staircase (a lot of steps). From here you can take the tour trolley. Or you can get a hop-on hop-off bus to enjoy all the wonderful sights Sorrento has to offer. The buses are open top, allowing you to enjoy the wonderful panoramic views. In addition, you can also arrange a horse carriage for a shorter tour.

Piazza Tasso Sorrento is also home to many local cultural traditions like Easter processions, carnival, summer and autumn festivals.

The train station is located next to Piazza Tasso Sorrento. Tickets can be bought from the stand where the train stops (next to the gorge).

Car parking of course, is a major problem. Please be careful walking. There is a lot of traffic, especially scooters. Italians drive fast, and they certainly are not watching out for you.[/tab]

    Agruminato Garden Sorrento

A citrus garden is a typical sight in the Sorrento Peninsula. What makes the Agruminato standout from other gardens is its location. Tourists can find it on Via Correale, 27, at the heart of the town. The estate where the garden is located originally belonged to the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, and once known as the Fondo Petrulo. This 60, 000 square meter citrus garden gradually decreased in size, and it was almost eradicated due to the creation of new buildings in the area.

Fortunately, the local government of Sorrento is making aggressive efforts to preserve traditions, so they can pass it on to future generations and share with to the world. One of the benefits of this government initiative is the preservation of the citrus garden. Much of the original estate were purchased and developed already. However, the Municipality of Sorrento was able to save approximately 11, 000 square meter of the estate. It is officially inaugurated as the town’s citrus garden. This is open to the public, so you can check it out once you are in town.

Agruminato Garden Sorrento allows visitors to walk across the grove, and enjoy the scent of citrus and lemon. As you wander along the shady path, you could hear birds singing and occasional buzzing of some insects. It is such a peaceful place; you will surely forget that Agruminato Garden Sorrento is actually in the middle of a busy town. It is a nice place to go if you want to escape the noise of the city, and enjoy the beauty of nature for a few minutes.

The produce of the garden is harvested by its caretaker, the I Giardini di Cataldo. They produce a wide range of citrus products from juices to liquors. If you are interested, you can buy some of their products in their store, which is located just across the garden. Many of the garden guests not only tried the products, they also bought some more to give as gifts.

Several top rated restaurants are located near the citrus garden like the REUP, La Dolce Sorrento, and Villa Rubinacci. It will only take a short trip in order to reach these restaurants. If you want to stay in an excellent accommodation near this special citrus garden, then consider checking in either in Europa Palace Grand Hotel, Gocce di Limone B&B Sorrento, or in Grand Hotel De La Ville Sorrento.

There is no doubt that the Agruminato is a small paradise in the middle of a noisy and crowded town. Leaving Sorrento without visiting this citrus garden is definitely a big mistake. It is no longer surprising why this became one of the most recommended tourist spot in Sorrento. Visit the garden, and enjoy the delicious scent of fresh citrus fruits.[/tab]

    Sorrento Cathedral

Sorrento Cathedral is a beautiful church located in the center of the town, situated just above the main street (Corso Italia) of Sorrento. It was built in the 11th century and then rebuilt in the 15th century in Romanesque style. It was dedicated to the Apostles James and Philip. In 1544,  it was christened by the Italian poet Torquato Tasso, a native of Sorrento. He was best known for his poem La Gerusalemme liberata (Jerusalem Delivered).

Outside there is a charming statue of Pope John Paul II, which is quite life like.  The outside of Sorrento Cathedral is whitewashed and really doesn’t do justice at all. Inside there is pure beauty everywhere. There are internal arches covered with fine majolica. Some wonderful marble, spectacular frescoes and quite of a lot of marquetry.

There are three amazing stained glass windows and the various bits of marquetry as you walk you go through the entrance. Don’t miss the crafted nativity scene right after the entrance to the left. You see a lot of people and animals and plenty of table settings. It skillfully crafted and has a wealth of detail, the more you look the more you see. The art in the alcoves which line the sides of the cathedral is also a sight to see.

There is a very nice marble altar area with an overhead statue of Christ on the cross. Also the wooden choir section behind the altar with it’s marvelous intarsia (knitting technique) is stunning.

The painting on the ceiling was made by Giacomo del Po near 1700. He was an Italian painter ( born in Palermo) of the Baroque.

I recommend everyone to see Sorrento Cathedral. It is not that big, and will not take up a lot of time to look around. You don’t need any religious interest to take in the breath-taking interior of this church. It is well worth a little bit of time just to have a walk around for the richness of details. There is no entrance fee. Unfortunately, they do not allow any photography, with flash or otherwise.[/tab]

    [tab name=”Description”]
    Port of Marina Grande Sorrento

The beautiful Port of Marina Grande Sorrento serves as the entrance way of hydrofoils that duck in the pier of Sorrento. Marina Grande lies in the nook of the Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana). The port can be found at Via del Mare. Where homes of locals, restaurants and shops rise along the curve of the majestic sea rocks.

Port of Marina Grande Sorrento is an ancient fishing village. Locals and tourists alike can witness dozens of Gozzi Sorrentini. The word ‘gozzo’ means boat. Gozzi Sorrentini, in particular, means a hand-made wooden boat with a triangular-shaped sail. During the ancient times, even before Sorrento became a popular tourist destination in Italy, fishing was the main source of living of the people in this town. Today, fishermen can still be found in Marina Grande sitting and mending fish nets with their bare hands.

One of the attractions that is worth-while to visit during your first few days in Sorrento is undoubtedly Marina Grande. This is true especially for people who just want to stroll along the shore and dine at nearby restaurants afterwards. The restaurants at the port are countless. And of course, because of the location, most of the restaurants delicacies are made from fresh fish.

In addition to strolling and dining, this place is most ideal for sunrise and/or sunset viewing. If your hotel or the place you are staying at is near Marina Grande, then I recommended that you come here early dawn or late afternoon in time for sunrise/sunset. Also there is a small beach where can go in the water, or just lay on the sand and work on your tan.

The best part of this place is perhaps the church. Sant’Anna, a church built in honor of Saint Anne, the patron saint of Sorrento, can be found in the heart of Marina Grande. Every 26th of July is the celebration of the Feast of St. Anne. During this holiday, people cram to the port and the sea gets filled with colorful and lighted boats. There is also a procession of the statue of the female saint.[/tab]

    [tab name=”Description”]

    Piazza Tasso in Sorrento
Piazza Tasso is the central business and commercial place in Sorrento, a town that overlooks the majestic Bay of Naples. This square is named after the renowned Italian poet Torquato Tasso because of his major contributions to Sorrento during the 16th century. In fact, a statue of Tasso stands in the north-east corner of the square in honor to Sorrento’s native born poet.

Piazza Tasso is literally the ‘heart of Sorrento’ where, during daytime, private cars, public utility vehicles, and even horse-drawn carriages would fill the streets. When the evening falls, where there is less traffic, the square turns into a perfect venue for fun and relaxation because of the neighboring cafés, restaurants, and classy shops. If you are a tourist in Sorrento, then be familiar with the Italian word ‘passeggiata’. In English, this means evening stroll, usually done by locals after working hours. This only implies that if your intention in visiting Piazza Tasso is to meet new people, then you have to go out at night time.

In addition to commercial establishments, the Baroque Church del Carmine (also called Santa Maria del Carmine), which is believed to be constructed during 230 to 240 A. D., also stands in the main square. In this church of the Carmelitani, the paintings of Onofrio Avellino like the ‘Virgin and Child, with Angels and Saints in Glory’ can be seen.

When it comes to food, one of the popular dining places in Piazza Tasso is Ristorante Tasso, a restaurant that can accommodate up to 350 guests. This restaurant is huge enough to cater banquets, gala and meeting dinners, and other special events. Ristorante Tasso promises its customers that it only serves authentic Italian cuisine and local Sorrento dishes made from fresh and seasonal ingredients.

Piazza Tasso was established in 1800. Since then, the square has undergone several remodeling and renovations as one of the ways to improve the beauty of the town. Today, not only the historical church or the restaurants can be seen in the square. The square is now also home to dozens of small stores selling anything under the sun, from local delicacies to unique souvenirs.[/tab]

Also find a seat at a waterside table, sip some wine and watch the world go by. You can find the fishermen bring in their daily catch, or watch them passing the time of day by mending to their fishing nets. There are a few souvenir shops, bars and and lots of seafood restaurants. The popular choice is Ristorante Bagni Delfino Sorrento, where the food is excellent and fresh. If you wish, you can also eat on a large covered boat that is stationed in the water.

There is also the opportunity to swim from a very small public beach. They cordoned off an area for swimming, so is safe to use. You can rent sun loungers and umbrellas if you wish.

    Ristorante Bagni Delfino Sorrento

Ristorante Bagni Delfino Sorrento is just a short walk from the hustle and bustle of Sorrento town. It is located in the delightful Marina Grande Sorrento surrounded by picturesque houses. After you get down to the water, you will see a sign that has an arrow with the words “Delfino”.  Just follow the sign and keep walking all the way down to the opposite end of the marina. It is situated on the end of the pier that sits in the Marina Grande, part of the Bay of Naples.

Ristorante Bagni Delfino Sorrento is a family owned restaurant that takes pride in high quality food. The hostess and waiters are very welcoming and friendly. Service is outstanding, and recommendations are spot on. Very helpful and accommodating to make sure you have the perfect dining experience. It is a great place to have anything you want. You can enjoy a drink, a light snack or a delicious meal. And you can spend all day there sunbathing and swimming from their private bathing deck.

Before your meal comes out, they give you complimentary bruschetta; grilled bread topped with fresh tomatoes and garlic, finished off with olive oil, salt and pepper. Portions are hearty and the dishes are robust in flavor. They get their seafood right off the fishermen’s boats, it’s as fresh as it gets. The fried calamari is lightly breaded, tender and flavorful. Other suggestions include, their seafood risotto with fresh mussels clams, squid and octopus. The risotto is delicately and flavored with very little garlic and topped with a pinch of fresh parsley. The sea bass, which is filleted at the table, is perfectly cooked and also excellent. If you have room for dessert, the Caprese chocolate cake is a terrific way to end the meal.

At the end of your meal they also provide you with complimentary limoncello, so you can enjoy some of what the proud people of Sorrento and the south of Italy are famous.

It’s nice to come here for lunch or for dinner, but it is especially beautiful in the evening when the sun goes down. The cool breeze from the bay is very soothing as you hear the calming whooshing sound of the waves. You can watch the sun go down and the lights come on all around the bay is another delight. The evening turns into a quaint village where you can spend a wonderful evening of romance and tranquility. It may get a bit cool at night, so remember to bring a light sweater. I suggest making reservations, as it a very popular restaurant. [/tab]
