    Milan Cathedral

    Duomo di Milano

Milan Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Italy, and the 5th largest in the world. The exterior of this Gothic cathedral has detailed stone work depicting biblical scenes and saints. There are over 3,400 statues, gargoyles, ect, all of them different from the other.

Milan Cathedral is the cathedral church of the city of Milan and the home of Cardinal Angelo Scola, the current archbishop. This lovely and historic church is dedicated to Saint Mary of Nativity.

Milan Cathedral is located on the main square of the city, next to another architectural extravaganza, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.

Bishop Antonio da Saluzzo commissioned the construction of the cathedral in the year 1385. Construction started in 1386 with the overwhelming support of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, the first-ever duke of Milan. Visconti who owned marble quarries gave access to it in order to commence the construction. The building of the cathedral was exempted from tax. The duke also invited notable architects from across Europe to help.

The building of the cathedral did not come fast and easy. Because it is remarkably huge and exceptionally elaborate, it took more than six centuries to complete. The cathedral was finally consecrated in 1418, although final works were continually applied until 1965.

Although undeniably expansive, the inside of the cathedral is quite dark. The interior has five large naves (main body of the church) that are divided by 52 pillars. These pillars represent the number of weeks in one whole year.

Inside the cathedral, you will find impressive marble. In addition, there are many stained glass windows, and murals, that tell many stories. Many beautiful paintings and artwork. Including the Trivulzio Candelabrum and the Altar of the Madonna of the Tree. The Renaissance marble altar, the three magnificent altars designed by Pellegrino Pellegrini and the statue made by Marco d’Agrate, an Italian sculptor, called St. Bartholomew.

Beneath the main altar, take the steps down to see the the actual body of St Charles Borromeo, who was known for his devotion and charity.

The best part is going up to the roof. Which requires paying either for the elevator or for using the stairs. There are about 170 steps. A bit tiring, but not impossible. There is only one elevator, so you can just imagine the long line. You have to pay €7 to climb the steps of the Duomo. It cost €12 to use the elevator. You will be rewarded with a breathtaking view from the top of this magnificent place, it gives a whole new perspective to Milan. It also gets you closer to the statues, so you can really enjoy even the small details. Try to get there for sunset, so you can capture some fantastic pictures.

The entrance to Milan Cathedral is free, but donations are accepted at various places throughout the church.

Be advised that if you would like to take photos while you are inside, you are supposed to buy a wristband to be able to do so.

Guards will turn tourists away for being inappropriately dressed. You can not enter with strapless or sleeveless tops. Ladies, shorts/skirts have to be below the knee.

I strongly suggest you rent the self-guided audio tour. It is very simple to use, and it also includes a map to guide your tour. You can also hire a tour guide to really enjoy this visit. They do a wonderful presentation, it’s literally a tour through the history of Milan.[/tab]

Brera Picture Gallery Milan is housed in a beautiful Baroque building, Palazzo Brera. It is very impressive, centered around a quadrangle. It was a former fourteenth-century convent. Afterwards, the Jesuits founded a school, a library and an observatory. And then finally, in 1776, the home of the Brera Academy (Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera). The original art collection was intended to be study material for the students. A lot of the paintings were given by churches and convents that closed over time. Through the years, the impressive collection expanded by donations and some purchases.

The art gallery spans over 38 rooms, filled with terrific works of art. It is located on the first floor of the building. There are mostly paintings by Italian artists, with a very large amount of religious art being represented. The artwork is arranged in chronological order, and geographically (schools).

Which include Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony Van Dyck, just to mention a few.

    Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

    A Fabulous Place to Shop!

Milan is one of the most fabulous cities in the world. Everything about it is breathing with elegance and class. One of the places you need to check while in there is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. This shopping arcade is one of the oldest shopping malls in the world. It is impressive both in size and architecture. Mosaic and statues with patriotic theme adorn this magnificent four story structure.

It is named after the first king of Italy after unification, King Victor Emmanuel II. It was designed by architect Giuseppe Mengoni. Mangoni, a renowned architect also designed the Palazzo di Residenza of Bologna Saving Bank. He was also involved with some of the Italian town halls and designed plans for the main market in Florence. Sadly, Mengoni had fallen to his death on the very last day of its construction. They say he fell off the top of the arch, which was the last piece to be completed.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is situated between the Piazza della Duomo and the Piazza della Scala. It is a spectacular five story glass enclosed with iron structure. As you enter from the Piazza della Duomo, there is a majestic ornamental arch that is worth a view and some photos.

The roof of the galleria forms a cross that can be seen from the cathedral’s roof, measuring 196 x 105 meters (643 x 346 feet) long. Since it opened for the public in 1867, it has been the favorite meeting place of the Milanese. This is why this shopping arcade is fondly called “Il Salotto di Milano” or the living room of Milan.

The Triumphal Arch serves as the entrance to the arcade, which is already an impressive structure by itself. As you enter the building, you will notice that the walkways are covered with metal and glass roof. A glass dome, which is thirty-six methods wide, covers the central piazza.

The ceiling vaults are decorated with mosaics representing Africa, Asia, Europe and America. In the middle of the galleria, there is a large octagon on the floor with four different, amazing mosaics. They are depicting the coat of arms of Milan, Florence, Rome and Turin. The capitals of the kingdom of Italy, in various historical periods. Milan has a red cross on a white field. Florence has an iris. Rome has the she-wolf, and Turin has a bull. According to tradition, if you put your right heel on the bull’s privates and spin three times, it’s said to bring good luck. After many years of tourists spinning around, the bull’s privates are totally worn away. It now replaced by a cone shaped hole.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is the place to be if you want to go on a shopping spree. It is where you can find some of the finest up-scale stores, such as Gucci , Prada, Vuitton, and Swarovski. They also have top notch cafeterias and restaurants that are quite popular. Be sure to take the time to dine in one of them between shopping.

TIP: Savini is deemed as the most famous and prestigious restaurant in the galleria, established since the year 1867. Do not leave Milan if you have not gone to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and have not tasted the specialty of Savini.[/tab]

    The Last Supper Milan

    L’Ultima Cena

Leonardo da Vinci is one the most notable painters in history. Most of his brilliant works have survived throughout the centuries, and one is the famous The Last Supper. It is painted on the wall of Church of Santa Maria dell Grazie in Milan, Italy. The painting depicts a scene in the bible when Jesus revealed to his disciples that one of them will betray him. Leonardo painted each disciple in varied levels of anger and shock.

The painting was commissioned by Ludovico Sforza, the duke of Milan at that time (from 1494 until 1499). It is not exactly clear when the work began, but many historians believe it is around 1495. Leonardo finished his work a few years after in 1498. The Last Supper covers a large portion of the wall of the convent’s refectory. Measuring from 460 cm × 880 cm (180 in × 350 in). Several details are referencing to the number three. The disciples are painted in groups of there, there are three windows Jesus, and Jesus’ figure resembles a triangle.

It is amazing that the The Last Supper Milan survived because it incurred several damages through the years. During WWII, American and British bombings of Milan destroyed part of the church which houses this masterpiece. However, the wall survived by miracle. Many of the restoration efforts caused more damages on the painting. Thankfully, one of Leonardo’s students created an accurate copy. It was used as basis for the restoration of The Last Supper. Moving the painting to a facility with highly controlled environment is impractical, so they modified the refectory instead. The refectory is now a sealed room with climate controlled environment; this helps preserve the painting.

The restoration efforts gave people from all over the world the opportunity to see one of the oldest and most significant paintings in history. Because the painting is so precious, visitors only have 15 minutes to relish the beauty of The Last Supper.

There are many things to see and places to go in the beautiful city of Milan. However, your tour will not be complete if you do not see The Last Supper Milan. It is an amazing experience.

In 1980, Church of Santa Maria dell Grazie became part of the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List for the main reason that it is among the most important creations during the Renaissance. The basilica itself, is a beautiful and serene place. The Gothic architecture is stunning, while the carvings and white pillars are very elegant.

The main reason for the church being on the list is that a national and cultural treasure is located deep within its vaults. The mural of the famous The Last Supper by the talented Leonardo da Vinci.

Accessing The Last Supper is a bit off-putting. However, it is very much worth the effort. The church uses an automated timing system on the their doors, so that The Last Supper Milan is not exposed to the outside environment. This means you are locked in several stages, including the gift shop. While waiting to enter, there is information explaining the history of the painting and the artist placed on the walls. Your group is allowed to stand with the painting for 15 minutes in a temperature regulated room. Detail are marvelous. You can see their emotions on how they felt when Jesus declared that he would be betrayed by one of his disciples.

The walls where the original painting was located has been repaired almost back to how they were before the bombs that dropped during WW II. This caused major damage, but luckily, it was not totally destroyed. According to sources, Leonardo did not use a damp-proof material for the mural. Nonetheless, it is still a good thing to know that for many years, preservation efforts have been carried out in the attempt to maintain the beauty of the painting.

Church of Santa Maria dell Grazie was built because Francesco I Sforza, the Duke of Milan that time, wanted to have a Dominican convent and a church dedicated to St. Mary of Grace. The groundbreaking happened in 1463 under its main architect Guiniforte Solari. Although it only took six years for the convent to be completed, the construction of Santa Maria delle Grazie church took several years to finish. Three decades and four years have passed and Francesco I Sforza was already succeeded by Ludovico Sforza, who wanted the church to be the private burial place of the Sforza family. When Ludovico’s wife Beatrice died, she was buried in the church. This happened in 1497, the same year the church was completed.

With just a 15-minute walk from the Duomo, you can reach the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Furthermore, keep in mind that the church is in between two metro stations, Conciliazone and Cadorna Triennale.

Please, be advised that tickets are limited to see this legendary painting. They sell out very fast, sometimes months in advance. Make sure to do a lot of research online ahead, and book your tickets in advance. You can also book it as part of a walking tour; they speak English. You need to arrive at least 15 to 20 minutes before the stated time. No pictures or video is allowed.[/tab]

    Dialogue in the Dark Milan

A unique and artistic experience, that offers a valuable lesson.

Dialogue in the Dark Milan is located inside the Institute for the Blind building in Milan.

Dialogo nel Buio means Dialogue in the Dark. This exhibition gives people an opportunity to understand the world through the perspective of a blind person. If you would like to experience the world through your other senses, then check out the Dialogo nel Buio.

You will learn to recognize what you hear, smell and touch without the aid of your eyes. While inside the building, you will be accompanied by a tour guide. You will be entering a completely dark building, so you might feel intimidated and scared at first. The tour guide is very nice and will make you feel at ease during the course. Which can be very important, especially those with anxiety and fear of the dark. As you go deeper into the building, you will start to appreciate this unique opportunity to experience the world using your other senses.

Dialogue in the Dark Milan is one of the most popular exhibition in Milan now. It was originally planned to last for a month only. However, it remains open for the next decade because it attracts a lot of tourists.

The mission behind Dialogue in the Dark Milan is simple. Sometimes, we do not pay much attention to the things around us because we take them for granted. It is an experience that everyone should do. It could surely change you, it allows you to use all your senses and maybe even think differently. It will give you a better understanding how people live who do not have the use of sight.

After the guided tour, go enjoy an aperitivo. They serve drinks and appetizers, all in the darkness, with a person playing the piano in the background. They also offer dinner in the dark on Saturday nights.

TIP: They do not provide an English speaking tour guide unless there is a group of eight or more. It is also important for you to book ahead of time.[/tab]

    Central square of Milan

Piazza della Scala Milan is situated between La Scala Opera House and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II Milan. The Galleria is one of the world’s oldest shopping malls. La Scala Opera House is one of the world´s best known opera and ballet theaters. Inside it has a impressive auditorium, and a beautiful orchestra. It has a spectacular stage, with a gorgeous crystal chandelier. On the far side of the square, stands Palazzo Marino. It was once a 16th-century palace, and today it is the City Hall of Milan. It was designed in in 1558 by Galeazzo Alessi, and viewed as a masterpiece of residential architecture of the sixteenth century. Luca Beltrami, an Italian architect, incorporated the facade that is facing Piazza della Scala between 1888 and 1892. The first facade of Palazzo Marino was originally facing south-east. It was looking towards Piazza San Fedele, the exact opposite to Piazza della Scala. The reason being was at the time the Piazza della Scala didn’t not exist.

In the center of Piazza della Scala Milan, there is a large statue of Leonardo da Vinci. It was sculpted in 1872, by Pietro Magni. The base of the statue illustrates paintings, sculpting, engineering and architecture. At the foot of the base, stands four of Leonardo da Vinci favorite students that he mastered. Leonardo da Vinci lived and created numerous artworks in several cities. However, his most famous masterpiece, The Last Supper is located in Church of Santa Maria dell Grazie.

Piazza della Scala Milan is on the small size, however there are some terrific places to take some pictures. Take a seat on one of the many benches around the statue of Leonardo. And treat yourself to a gelato and just watch the Milanese come and go.

Piazza della Scala Milan can be accessed from the Piazza del Duomo. As you come from the Duomo, and walk through Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, you will reach the Piazza della Scala.[/tab]

    Saint Maurice al Monastero Maggiore

Church of Saint Maurice al Monastero Maggiore Milan

Saint Maurice al Monastero Maggiore is tucked away in Milan and a little hard to find, but very nearby the Duomo. The church, from the outside, has a simple exterior, but once you get inside you will be astonished.

Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore is one of the oldest churches in the city of Milan. From October to June, this church, holds a Sunday mass in celebration of the Byzantine Rite, or the Rite of Constantinople. Aside from Sunday services, the church also serves as a popular venue for concerts.

Originally, Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore was attached to the Monastero Maggiore. Monastero Maggiore was once a female convent of the Benedictines, but is now used as an archaeological museum. In the early 1500’s (some sources would say in the year 1503) is when the construction of the church began. The gorgeous architecture of the church was designed by Gian Giacomo Dolcebuono who collaborated with Giovanni Antonio Amadeo. Both are two of the many distinguished Italian architects and sculptors.

Like other churches, it took several years to complete. In fact, the edifice was finished only in 1518, which is more than a decade after. It was Cristoforo Solari who finished the two-part building. One part is for the faithful, the other for the nuns. Hundreds of years after the edifice’s completion, the nuns were no longer allowed to cross over the wall that divides the edifice.

Inside Chiesa di Milano there are beautiful frescoes on the walls plus an impressive altar. You will find the oldest pipe organ in Milan. This very large and impressive organ was built in 1554. Several efforts are being carried out in order to restore this precious possession.

As I mentioned earlier, Saint Maurice al Monastero Maggiore has two sections. Make sure you walk to the left side and towards the back. Enter the second section through a small door to the Nun’s Hall. You will find a hidden treasure trove of beautiful, amazing 16th century frescoes telling biblical stories. Many frescoes are done by Bernardino Luini. Also take the time to read the plaques (in Italian and English) describing the amazing artwork that you’re seeing, it will definitely enrich your experience. You can take as many photos as you wish, but without any flash.

Admission to the church is free, but there is a box into which you can place a donation. There is a fee for the archaeological museum (superb collection of ancient artifacts). It is really worth a visit.

Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore is open to the public from 9:30 in the morning until 5:30 in the afternoon, Tuesdays through Saturdays.

The church is not available for tours on Sundays of October to June because again, services in observance of the Eastern Orthodox tradition are being held.

TIP: A guided tour to Chiesa di Milano is available for less than $70. In addition, to this church, you will also get to see Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” and visit the Church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro.[/tab]
