    Amalfi Cathedral

    Duomo di Sant’Andrea Apostolo

Amalfi Cathedral is a beautiful church that is located in the heart of Amalfi. You can visit Amalfi Cathedral for free, however you have to pay an entry fee (3 euros) to visit the cloisters and the crypt (well worth the very informative and well planned tour). A must see, when visiting this beautiful place. You have to climb a staircase to get to the Cathedral. The steps offer wonderful views of the piazza below, as well as other parts of Amalfi. The steps leading up are quite a challenge, and may be difficult for those with mobility issues.

After climbing the long impressive staircase, you are led to the ticket office on the left hand side of the church. You will go through a cloister area. The frescoes in the cloisters are stunning. You will then go into the old Duomo, which functions as a museum now. It has many fascinating religious artifacts that has been collected over the centuries. The details in the carvings and paintings are remarkable.

The Cathedral is very solemn and impressive inside. Magnificent 11th century bronze doors. Baroque style with breathtaking frescoes, and their depiction of Christ hanging on the (13th century) cross. Be sure to take in the view of the  stunning vaulted ceiling. It has scenes of Saint Andrew martyrdom, painted by Andrea dell’Asta. The facade has a mosaic portraying Triumph of Christ and his twelve apostles in gold. The bell tower is coated by colorful majolica tiles. Don’t miss the really old stone relics in the outdoor garden. There are several small chapels. One has the coffin of dead Christ, which is carried through the streets of Amalfi on Good Friday.

Amalfi Cathedral is rich in both religious as well as historic perspective. This place happens to be the last abode of St. Andrews (Jesus’s apostle), patron of Amalfi. You will get to see the crypt which holds the remains of St. Andrew. His remains were brought here in 1208. It is decorated in colorful marble, with beautiful frescoes on the ceiling. There is also a large bronze statue of him that is most impressive.

The guided tour is well laid out, and the information is readily provided in many languages. It should only take an hour to see everything. Try to get there early in the morning to avoid the large crowds that arrive by boat. Remember to dress appropriately. Cover your knees and shoulders before entering, scarfs and shawls are provided.[/tab]

    Museum of Paper Amalfi

    Museo della Carta

Museum of Paper will introduce you to the magic of fine paper making and its importance to Amalfi, past and in the present. This is one of the oldest, paper mills in Europe.

Museum of Paper Amalfi is just a ten minute walk from the main square up to the quieter part of Amalfi. From the center of town, just walk up the hill and follow the signs to the paper mill.

Museum of Paper is housed in an old paper mill. It exhibits vintage books and old machines for production of paper, which is still working order. A guide who speaks English very well, provides a very interesting historical (half-hour) tour. He will explain the process of paper making, the machines and how the Amalfi river provided the power. Also, there are signs throughout the museum to offer you more information.

The first room has a display of how numerous types of fine paper were dried, and how the beautiful flowers were pressed into them. Afterwards you will go into the cellar to see the machines that did the pounding and pressing. After viewing the uses of the various pieces of machinery, there is a demonstration of how the paper was made involving a member of the tour group. The person will dip the screen into the tank, which is composed of beaten fabric scraps, chemicals and urine. The tour guide later tells everyone, that the last ingredient is present in the original process, however not actually in the demo.

The company still makes paper on a small scale. However, not at this site, according to the guide. Their primary customer is the Vatican.

Additionally, there is a lovely shop attached to the museum where you can buy unique paper-based souvenirs. The employee in the shop is very friendly. He usually offers a free piece of paper as a souvenir, so that you can sign it with a real traditional ink pen.

I recommend taking a tour. Learning about the history of paper production gives you a real appreciation of the hard work involved in paper production from many years ago.

The cost of the museum tour (4 euros) includes a guided tour in English or Italian, which takes about thirty minutes.[/tab]

The area is private, nice and very peaceful. There are sundecks on the rocks above the ocean with loungers, umbrellas and beach towels. There is an iron ladder that goes directly into the water. And if you are feeling adventurous, you can  jump (a few feet) off the lower ledge into the sea.

The restaurant serves traditional Campania cuisine. Great food and service. The view from the dining room is truly exceptional looking at Amalfi and the ocean. Breakfast is complimentary, and served in the same dining room. They have a large and diverse spread of foods to cater for all tastes.

    Le Palme Hotel Amalfi

Le Palme Amalfi is situated up in the hills above Amalfi, giving the most stunning views of the hills sides covered in lemon trees and the Mediterranean. If you don’t mind the venture out of town, Le Palme Amalfi is well worth the trek. Le Palme Hotel Amalfi is a family owned hotel that is absolutely amazing. It is about 300 steps down from the road above. It does have a very slow moving elevator to assist you with your luggage. When arriving at the hotel you are greeted with a warm welcome. The family and their staff are absolutely accommodating and professional. They are very friendly and helpful, always ready to answer your questions.

    Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi

Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi is in a wonderful location, perched on a cliff offering the most amazing views of the sea and Coast. It’s a five minute walk from the center, but quite a climb up. However, this isn’t unusual as many of the hotels in Amalfi are built into the cliff. The ferry is really close by and you can take it to Positano, Sorrento, etc.

When you arrive at the hotel, there is an elevator that will take you within the hillside up to the hotel. From there another elevator will take you to reception on the fifth floor.

Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi is five star elegant hotel housed in a former 12th century monastery. It has been immaculately restored with contemporary white interiors. The refurbished Abbey Chapel and Cloisters is a beautiful opportunity for quiet reflection. The communal areas are light and airy with fantastic views. The entire property is simply breath-taking.

Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi features fifty-three rooms. There are thirty seven rooms among the Classic, Superior and Deluxe Rooms. And seventeen Junior Suites and Suites. Rooms are spotless and modern, with touches of old world charm, like the vintage tiles. Some rooms are equipped with a balcony. Most of the Deluxe Suites and Jr Suites offer either a balcony or a terrace with excellent views of the Amalfi coast. All bedrooms include air-conditioning, and heating. A satellite TV, and free Wi-Fi. A minibar, safety box, among other things. Private bathroom with elegant marble baths. Plenty of toiletries and a hairdryer. Sheets and towels changed at your request.

The service in the hotel is excellent. The staff are so kind and attentive. Always ready to assist, and make sure that you have a wonderful stay. They spend extra time helping you reserve a private boat if needed, and suggesting amazing restaurant recommendations.

The breakfast is delicious with lots to choose from; fruits, fresh pastries, meats and cheeses, etc.

And if you need some downtime from the sightseeing, the infinity pool at the hotel is heavenly. The pool is heated, with such an amazing view.

I would recommend booking dinner in the hotel also. They have two amazing restaurants. Both serve delicious cuisines. Service is great, with attention on all details.

Room Tip: Try to book a room that includes a terrace, you could spend your whole vacation lounging over the coast of Amalfi.[/tab]

    Excelsior Grand Hotel Amalfi

Excelsior Grand Hotel Amalfi is strategically perched on a cliff top with a panoramic view of the Amalfi coast. It is about 6km or so from the town. Definitely not easy walking distance as the roads are very steep, narrow and windy.

Amalfi itself can be accessed by a free shuttle bus (only 15 minute ride) provided by the hotel. It comes in very handy as the hotel is a little out of the way. Service starts at 9:00 a.m, stops for about three hours in the middle of the day and ends around 9:00 p.m. There also a local SITA bus stop near the hotel, but be aware you need to buy your ticket before you get on the bus. It is a perfect base to see the sights of the Amalfi coast and surrounding attractions around Naples.

The hotel has a wonderful ambiance with a touch of old fashioned elegance. Excelsior Grand Hotel Amalfi features hundred and four rooms. The rooms are spacious and very clean. It includes a flatscreen TV, pay-per-view channels. All rooms have a sea view which you’ll be able to enjoy from your balcony.

The entire staff at the hotel are very friendly and helpful. The reception staff speak excellent English. Always attentive, courteous and will make your stay a pleasure.

Breakfast has a wide selection of delicious foods, pastries, yogurts, breads, etc. It also includes hot items such as sausage, bacon and scrambled eggs. All served in a large room with a great balcony overlooking the ocean and Amalfi coastline.

The private beach is terrific. There is an elevator that you will take down, so you don’t have to walk the five hundred or so steps down to the beach. You can swim in the crystal clear, and incredibly blue Mediterranean sea. You have to pay for the beach, but compared to the public beaches it’s well worth the price. You have to buy the tickets at reception desk for the beach. The cost is 10 euros each, you get an umbrella, and chair. Plus 5 euros each for the towels, which you have to return at the end of the day. In addition there is a lovely bar and restaurant located on site.

There is a swimming pool with great views. Very lovely and there are plenty of loungers and space. The fee for towels applies for the pool area also. There is a nice pool bar and seating area, again with fantastic views down on to Amalfi town.

No entertainment in the evenings. But there is a beautiful village of Pogerol above the hotel, which is about a ten minute walk away. There are a couple of nice bars and restaurants here.

Free Wi-Fi is only available in communal areas.

There is a restaurant on site, with a terrific selection of Italian cuisines and local wines.
