Shopping In Venice

Rialto Market

A daily market, with Venetian specialties.

A lively place, with many locals and tourists. They have a slew of little stands selling everything. From clothes, to Venetian masks, artwork, and key chains. They also sell fresh fruit, veggies and seafood. Produce stands are outside, while the fish vendors are located inside. They have all sorts of fish. Every day the local fishermen bring a extensive variation of fish caught early that morning. From tiny sardines and anchovies. Tasty soft shelled crabs and large swordfish. Fleshy octopuses, shrimps, conchs and much more. This is especially nice if you are staying in a B&B/apartment, or have the capability to prepare meals while in Venice. Prices are comparable to other parts of Venice. Also, don't forget to bargain with them. Most of the time they will relent and offer you a nice discount. Suggested length of visit, 1 - 2 hours. If you enjoy people watching, and experiencing the local life, be sure to stop and visit Rialto Market. Some terrific cafe's and restaurants in the area too.

Address: Campo de la Pescaria, 30125 Venice, Italy
Fresh Produce Market 7:30 am - 1:00 pm Monday thru Saturday
Fish Market 7:30 am - 1:00 pm Tuesday thru Saturday

Il Canovaccio

This is a very interesting shop where you can find real Venetian masks. They have a wonderful variety of masks with gorgeous, traditional and innovative designs, while upholding the classic Venetian style. They also have a very large collection of animal masks. Lions, birds, dragons, and many other wild animals. The owner and his staff are very helpful (speak English). They are very pleasant and will gladly explain things about the masks. Prices are a little high. However, the quality of the masks are excellent, as they are all hand made. Even if you don't plan on buying something, it is worth a visit, as they always have a beautiful window display.

Artigianato d'Arte di Vianello Mauro

Mauro Vianelllo Glass Artisan

This little shop is filled with beautiful glass figurines. Mostly fish, shells and other sea critters, in all shapes and colors.  Mauro, the owner is very personable and passionate about glass blowing. He is very helpful and accommodating (able to speak fluent English). He will gladly give you a demonstration (45 minutes) on how he crafts these beautiful and delicate works of artwork. During the demo, he will take the time to explain step by step what he is doing. He charges a fee for the demonstration, but it is well worth it. If you buy a figurine, the cost of your demonstration will be deducted from the price of the object. I would recommend a visit for those who are interested in the art of glass. His studio is very small, and will fit only 4-5 people. It is pretty hard to see Mauro without making an appointment first. You can contact him via his website or by email. Prices are very reasonable compared to many of the shops in Venice. His shop is located in a quiet area of Venice, not far from The Rialto Bridge and Rialto Market.

Le Mercerie

This street connects from The Rialto Bridge to St Marks Clock Tower Venice. This shopping area is divided into three narrow streets. Mercerie dell’Orologio, Mercerie de San Zulian, and Mercerie di San Salvador. You can pretty much find most of the big names here (Gucci, Max Mara, Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana, Benetton, Cartier, Rolex, etc.). In addition, there are some lovely Venetian souvenir shops. Prices in most stores can be a little high. Even if you don't buy anything, is great for window shopping and people watching.

Paper Owl

This is a wonderful shop that has beautiful artwork made of paper. It is all handmade, and of entirely stunning quality. Stefania, the artist, makes everything herself. And the gorgeous watercolors are done by her mom. She creates everything in her shop, so you get a chance to watch her perform her magic. You will be able to find plenty of souvenirs (earrings necklace parrots, flowers, etc.) to bring home, making your Venetian experience truly special and unique.

Itaca Art Studio di Monica Martin

It is located in the heart of Venice, situated between Rialto Bridge and St Marks Basilica Venice. It is full of Monica's original beautiful paintings (watercolors), and also a wide range of excellent prints of Venice. If you are looking for something different, I recommend visiting this store. Prices are very reasonable.
